Back End Developer at University of Washington

The UW College of Arts & Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Back End Developer with an interest in DevOps and Server Administration.

The Arts & Sciences Web Team creates, manages, and maintains websites on behalf of the College of Arts & Sciences. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a small team of developers and designers to support the Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences at the UW.

As part of our team, the Back End Developer will work with our team to build and improve websites, while also maintaining and enhancing our server infrastructure on Amazon Web Services. You will have the opportunity to work collaboratively to produce sites that reflect the amazing research, scholarship, creativity, and student experiences that occur within the College of Arts & Sciences.

The Back End Developer must be comfortable managing servers, working with code, interfacing with hosting systems, building sites with Drupal, and trouble-shooting within these areas.

The candidate should have experience working in an agile, multi-task, and multiple website setting. Additionally, they should have experience building and maintaining cloud web hosting environments. The candidate should have knowledge of the Amazon Web Services platform, including EC2, RDS, VPC and other technologies. Experience working with the Drupal content management system, and developing solutions using HTML, SQL, JavaScript, CSS, PHP, XML and JSON is essential. Strong communication skills are required, as you will work with developers, designers, editors, producers, marketing managers, and faculty from across the College.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing our test, staging and production servers on Amazon Web Services
  • Recommending and implementing improvements to our server architecture
  • Performing server, CMS, and security updates
  • Managing and updating DNS records
  • Managing site back-ups
  • Keeping SSL certificates current and secure
  • Building websites with Drupal 8
  • Building sites, modules and web applications for clients
  • Improving workflows, testing, debugging, and documenting procedures
  • Working with a team to deploy systems, automate and streamline processes, improve DevOps, and troubleshoot issues
  • Providing support and training to web editors
  • Evaluating emerging technologies and make recommendations
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, and three years of progressively responsible server operations, web developer and/or lead programmer experience in an IT environment with a minimum of 2 years web development and programming, with experience using HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, PHP, JSON on a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).

Demonstrated experience in:

  • Building and maintaining cloud web hosting environments
  • Working with the Drupal content management system
  • Developing websites/applications/solutions to meet customer needs
  • Managing web security

Additionally, you should have:

  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services, Ubuntu, Varnish, Fail2Ban, Git, managing workflows, and/or working in higher education.
  • Working knowledge of scripting and automating processes, SASS, and/or Shibboleth
  • Knowledge of IT accessibility issues for users with disabilities; familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices; experience testing for accessibility; and demonstrated ability to design content/applications with accessibility considerations.
